I haven’t recall when the last time I heard news from Indonesia that wasn’t including disaster or terrible accidents.

There’s a phrase said everything that begin with bad things, usually has bad endings. For Indonesia, the beggining of the year 2007 wasn’t started with celebration, but instead with the terrible thing. It is probably one of the worst accident ever. A plane called Adam Air reported missing just like that in the air, and then few weeks later that unfortunate plane was actually crash into the ocean and still no news about all the passengers. Of course, if we want to be realistic, that no one will survive in that plane, so let’s assumed that they’re all dead. The worst thing is the government couldn’t afford to pick up the plane from the bottom of the sea.

Then, just few months after that. A ferry sinking and burning in the sea, again kill bunch of people. It is so ironic, because just few months before (December 2006), another ship also sink and burn killed more than 150 people!.

The irony seemed not stop until that. Because few days ago, another plane crash when landing only a day after an earthquake happen which is also kill more than 50 people. Right now, more than 20 people died. I personally think that with this latest crash, then I’ll lose trust to any of transportation in Indonesia, especially the air and the sea ones. The latest plane that crashed is my LAST hope for the safety. After the recent crash with Adam Air and several crash with Lion Air and Mandala Airlines in this last 5 years, I always thought that at least we still have Garuda. The tickets usually more expensive than the others local Indonesian airplanes, but as long it’s safer then it didn’t really matter. But now, seemed that I have to choose even more expensive ways if I ever go back to Indonesia. I don’t believe that travelling with airplanes is safer than car, at least it doesn’t apply to Indonesian airplanes.

So, how safe is Indonesia? I don’t know. Flood, earthquake which also triggered Tsunami that killed more than 100.000 just few years ago. Not to mention the terrorism which also kiiled many innocent people that happen in this last ten years. (*)
