lord of the rings trilogy
// March 11th, 2008 // movie talk
I’ve been planning to write my thoughts about these movies but somehow I kept delaying and since then I’ve been watching more and more movies, so I better do it now or never doing it at all.
I’m so grateful that I watched this movies, I can’t believe how much I missed in life before. Now I wish I were watching all the series on the theater, maybe even on Imax, because everything from The Fellowship of the Ring to The Return of The King are just brilliant. This is probably the best movies ever made. It’s already classic and gonna remains one for many years to come.
After I saw all the trilogy, I watched different fantasy movie, Stardust. It should be great experience but in fact it made me angry to Peter Jackson! How could he set up the standard TOO high that makes any other fantasy movies would be TOO hard follow and even came close! It makes the other fantasy movies seemed like a joke. I know it sounds harsh but Jackson shouldn’t spoiled me that way!
Honestly, I don’t really know what to say about Lord of The Rings. My experience with Lord of the Rings is hard too hard too describe with any words. I thought Harry Potter movies are the best stories ever put on screen. It seemed that I was SO wrong.
How I mad at him for make me have less fun experience in other movies, but also admire him for create such a fantastic movies. He liked the God of fantasy movies. But I think it isn’t fair if all the credit just goes to him. How about the special effects crew, the screenwriters, the cast… and of course to Mr. Tolkien himselves.
J.R.R Tolkien. I kinda felt bad for him for not being able to see his imagination translate so amazingly beautiful (and probably accurate?) on screen. I am sure he would be feel so proud. Of course without his creative mind, Lord of The Rings wouldn’t be this popular. Now reading all Lord of The Rings has became one of the most important things that I MUST read. I still plan to read those in Indonesian though.
Back to the movies, I think every series deserve to win the Best Picture. I can’t believe none of the cast got nominated for Oscar especially for Viggo Mortensen, Cate Blanchett and Christopher Lee. But I think the one that deserve the most is Sean Austin for his role as Samwise Gamgee. And if only they would award character made by computer graphic, they should give a award to Andy Serkis who played as Gollum/Smeagol, which believe it or not is my favorite character.
Before I am talking about Smeagol, I have some other favorite character. I like Gandalf. Maybe because he’s a cool wizard and has many interesting scene. Especially when he jump from the tower or when he fought with Sauron’s creature at the mine (I forgot the name). Of course when he came back as Gandalf The White although I prefer him as Gandalf The Grey. I think he’s more fun that way.
Then comes Aragorn. I can’t believe all my girlfriends are crazy about Legolas. Aren’t they blind or something? Aragorn IS the real deal! Thanks to Viggo Mortensen who makes the character looked so tough, great and… handsome
. In fact, Mortensen seemed to always looked handsome no matter how much dirt they tried to put on his face.
Next will be Galadriel. Blanchett is always beautiful but in this one she just looked so angelic, but of course that was the point, right? I like how the elves always showed up in such a dramatic, divine, hypnotic way. That’s also one of my favorite scene in the movie.
I also like Sauran. Well, I don’t wanna be friend with him for sure, but isn’t Christopher Lee so perfect as him. I mostly like his deep voice. Well, it seemed all the cast (except for Gollum) prefer to talk with lower tone. Just listen to Galadriel, Arwen and many others.
Okey, and now why I like Gollum the best or I actually prefer to call him Smeagol instead. First, I like the computer graphic people better for being able to create him as good as what we see on screen, but then the more I learn about his character the more I sympathizes with him more.
I know he’s not a nice character and not too mention his look. At first he seemed dangerous and seemed has his own hidden agenda. He’s also very creepy especially when he shows that he’s having a split personality. However, when Frodo start to have some kind of empathy with him, that’s when I started to like him as well. Frodo knew that he’s not always like he looks like now. He once a human (hobbit) too, but because of the ring, he changed into such horrible creature and his life seemed has ruined forever. Frodo even decided to call him with his “hobbit” name which is Smeagol and not longer after that Smeagol started to trust him completely.
One of the scene with him that really affects me is when for the first time (and probably the first time in his life), he seemed happy. In fact he even sing when he tried to catch a fish in a lake at Gondor (I think) only soon to be catch and torture by Faramir’s army. He thought that Frodo betrayed him and since then he couldn’t trust him anymore. To me that’s the saddest scene in this movies, even sadder when Gandalf die or when Frodo asked Sam to leave. Am I crazy?
Wow, it seemed my whole review mostly talked about Smeagol. I’m not forget about all the fantastic fighting scene in this movie. The last battle of course the greatest. Remember how Legolas jumped on that giant elephant (sorry I am bad with names). That’s one of the coolest thing ever.
The setting also unbelievable. My favorite is Gondor. What an amazing city. Of course the place where the elves lived are my favorite as well.
Now, I just hope they will make The Hobbit, but it seemed that Peter Jackson won’t be on it. I still hope that he will because he seemed the one that already familiar with Lord of The Rings and I think many people already getting used with his style (*)

Sounds like you loved it! Great!
It’s always interesting reading the thoughts of someone who hasn’t read the book and didn’t know beforehand what would happen. The films are quite faithful to the books – they are I think absolutely faithful in terms of atmosphere, milieu, the races, and the world of Middle Earth in general, and in terms of themes and characters (though there are some changes fans got up in arms about). The plot is broadly accurate, but some things have been expanded upon, and others dropped, some things have been changed and other things that happened ‘off screen’ in the book have been depicted in the film. I personally think most of Jackson’s choices were the right ones, as do most others, but some fans don’t agree.
You’re right, he really raised the bar for fantasy – even the good ones made before Rings look very… unambitious in comparison. They really pulled off the seemingly impossible!
Ian McKellan was actually nominated for ‘Fellowship’, but no one else was. There was a push for Sean Astin after ROTK, as well as Andy Serkis for Gollum, but it didn’t transpire. I think everyone agrees that Gandalf the Gray is more fun than the White, but the second incarnation was definitely more effective in carrying out his mission! Btw, Christopher Lee played Saruman, not Sauron (who never had a physical form except in the prologue), and yeah he was great in the role.
Smeagol/Gollum is often regarded as the most interesting and complex character in the whole thing, so it’s not surprising people latch onto him! I actually think the film version is more sympathetic than the book version, and that’s largely due to Serkis’ amazing performance. Oh, and you’re right, some of the cast do speak with soft voices, particularly Viggo Mortensen – though he talks like that in every movie!
As for the Hobbit, Jackson will be involved but not as director. Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) is apparently in the running for the director position. Should be interesting.
You’re right I am totally forgot about McKellan nomination.
And what I really mean is Lee as Saruman but since both names Saruman and Sauran is so similar, I often got those two confused. Thanks for the correction.
I heard about Del Toro as the director. Even though I prefer Jackson I think probably with LOTS of budget then the result will still be great.
Actually there are more things to be praised in this movie like how every city/town/kingdom or whatever has their own unique things, the fascinating creatures, costumes, the language and many many more.
Remember my list of my top movies every year? it seemed that I have to change the number one of every year where LOTR released with you know what.
Yeah, the names are a bit similar. The animated movie in the 70s called him ‘Aruman’ for that reason!
I know what you mean, the films were crammed with so much that is worth commenting on, it’s mind boggling to think about writing it all down (and I’ve seen some reviewers try)!
